Screw the big money websites, hack the Wii.

The clock is ticking. Sweat is dripping down your forehead. The sound of your heart beating echoes through your ears as you try desperately to focus. “Don’t get caught, this is illegal.” the angel on your shoulder whispers. A mess of wires lay before you. So close…. so close…… and with the push of a button, you just managed to hack your Wii.

Whether you want to get as complicated as soddering a mod chip in or as simple as installing the (slightly) illegal software on your little game console of happiness, web sites are popping up all over the Internet to tell you how.

Finally, others are seeing the wastefulness in spending up to $75 on a single video game when you can burn them all for free at Nintendo’s expense. The economy is making wallets tight, and you have to save where you can. Or you just like saying you hacked into something. Either way, enjoy.

Not that I hacked mine, but let’s say hypothetically, it took me about two hours over the weekend. And anytime I hypothetically got stuck, there were dozens of incredibly active on-line forums to tell me the next step to take. All I hypothetically needed was a burned copy of Wii Gator software, the HomeBrew channel, a memory card, and the Legend of Zelda – what, you expected geeks to execute the hack on Madden or something? Pssht.
And now -hypothetically- my Wii can play any burned game as well as DVDs. Hypothetically, I’m not complaining.

It seems Nintendo is well aware of what is going on and really doesn’t mind. While they keep updating their own software to keep hackers on their toes, that’s really it. I was told that several people have sent their Wii back to Nintendo to be repaired complete with illegal Mod Chip and were sent back their game with whatever problem repaired and the chip in a zip-lock baggie in the same package. God job, Nintendo.

Apparently the craze has gone well beyond just the console itself. Players are now figuring out how to rewire their Wiimote (the remote used to play, for those living under a rock) to put in LED lights wherever they see fit and how to create a Mii (again, for those under the rocks, that’s your personalized character) wearing pink pants, or any color for that matter. Dream big, hackers. And thanks for making my Wii entertainment a whole lot cheaper, hypothetically.
