South By Southwest Invades Austin

The spring break destination for geeks. The haven for nerds. The hot spot for the intellectually advanced. The 23rd annual South by SouthWest (SXSW) came and went through downtown Austin, TX again this year. The festival – er, I mean conference- is infamous for it’s spot-on ability to predict trends. Just two years ago, SXSW-ers were buzzing about a little known site called Twitter. It’s a shame that idea didn’t take off.

Musically, an eclectic mix performed and wowed crowds. Death on Two Wheels, Wax Fang, and other college radio station bands put on good shows, attracting their loyal fan base. Metallica and Kanye West each made their own unannounced but far from surprise performances. The Oak Ridge Boys put on the most buzz worthy show, showcasing some classic hits like “Bobby Sue” and “Elvira” and topped it off with a remake of “Seven Nation Army” that still has geeks singing. Ebony Bones came with her seven piece band all of whom dressed as if they were bringing Mardis Gras to 6th Street.

Technology wise? Smart Phone toting college hipsters raved about the new location status updates. That is, broadcasting your location to all your faithful followers on Twitter, Facebook, etc. One app called FourSquare can be downloaded on your Iphone and advertise your current location so your friends can track you down. Or, #taxishare allows you to find other users in your immediate area (like an area) who are looking to hail a cab so you can share the ride and share the fare. Clever, Clever.

Quote of the Week: “We’re virgins to South by Southwest, but we’re gonna slut it up all week.” Lead singer of These Darlings

Most Random Flash From the Past: Devo – on stage with orange crossing guard vests and the infamous flower pot hats, audiences were wondering what decade they were in but were nonetheless impressed by the classic Devo style of synthesizers, video arts display, and some really cool music.

Best Bonus Perk: The ever-perky Rachel Ray was seen close to stage while hubby John Cusimano’s band, the Cringe rocked out. The next day Ray’s voice was so raspy she could barely speak. Good job, SXSW.

Here’s what one local said about his experience with the yearly festival.
