Maj Cha’ means “Good Show” in Klingon – Star Trek 2009 Doesn’t Suck

Still stinging over the disappointment that is X-men: Origins? Wishing Hollywood was a person you could beat senselessly for dropping the ball? Too timid to watch the new Star Trek for fear of a Star Wars Episode 3 – type failure, sans Jar Jar Binks? Relax, life is about taking risks. And I promise, you won’t be disappointed. Star Trek is fabulous.
Congratulations, J.J. Abrams. You made a remake that didn’t suck. You made a remake without trying to reinvent the wheel. The original Star Trek didn’t suck and you and your crew paid honor to that.
Of course, special effects are phenomenal. Just pushing the edge of flashy and overdone, the team managed to keep the explosions and computer graphics right below too much. The first ten minutes, without ruining anything, will get you ready for what’s about to come.
Chris Pine is an interesting Captain Kirk. He’s young and inexperienced, but brings a lightness to Kirk that is unexpected. No more Shatner, this is the updated Star Trek! Captain Kirk has always been, well, kind of a dick. Chris Pine brings a touch of empathy along with the role. He adds new dimension to a character that you thought you knew inside and out. Young actor or not, that takes talent. In the ever raging battle between Kirk and Picard, score one for Kirk. Expect to see Pine go far.
As Spock, Zachary Quinto may make you do a double take. Besides the resemblance, Quinto brilliantly displays the inner workings of the troubled Spock without hogging camera time or being over the top.
I do wish the back story of Romulan Captain Nero could have been developed a little more. Understandably, the movie was designed for the knowledgeable Trekkie, but an extra five minutes on the kick-ass bad guy really wouldn’t have killed the plot, and made a little more sense to the hundreds of teeny-boppers that are just being introduced to the phenomena. Also, the narrated flashbacks seemed a little rushed, as in, lets just get through this and go back to the action sequences. That being said however, the movie has a great pace and super few lulls that make you check your cell phone and die for a cigarette. Impressive for a movie that runs a little over two hours. And I smoke a lot.
Overall, I give the movie an A-. Not bad at all, though probably a little less than what the average Trekkie ever received in school.
